Pannaphan Yodmanee’s works acquired by the Musée d’art contemporain de Lyon

The Musée d’art contemporain de Lyon has acquired Thai artist Pannaphan Yodmanee’s work originally conceived for the 15th Biennale d’art contemporain.

Pannaphan’s Quarterly Myth offered a beautiful and intimate experience inside concrete tubes where the viewer was invited to walk in, similar to a refuge travelling through a tunnel. Drawing from her training as a Buddhist painter, Pannaphan gracefully painted the interior of these tubes with golden traditional Buddhist patterns combined with Christian imageries and contemporary motifs, as if she was decorating the walls of a sacred cave.

Exploring the contrasts between old and new; past and present civilisations, Pannaphan combines found objects with natural elements and painted materials associated with traditional Thai art.

“I became interested in the concept of religion through the education I received as a child. Growing up, I wanted be an artist that uses religion as a subject to interpret and interrogate our contemporary world and its future.” – Pannaphan Yodmanee

Pannaphan Yodmanee’s work is now part of the Musée d’art contemporain de Lyon’s permanent collection.
